1676 AFRICA Map John SPEED First English Map of Africa Fine Condition RARE

The first English map of the continent of Africa, engraved by Abraham Goos for Speed's'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World', the first English atlas of the world. Africæ, Described, the Manners of their Habits, and Buildings. Double-page engraved map hand-colored in outline. 8 inset town views at upper margin, 10 costumed figures at sides. Measures approximately 15 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches (395 x 520mm) [Bassett and Chiswell, 1676]. Mild edge-wear including a few small chips, creasing. Small piece at top left corner torn with marginal loss (only), not affecting text or image (see photos).
Small marginal tear at bottom right edge, does not extend beyond margin (see photos). Date not printed on map but this map is well documented from this period. One of my favorite sellers.
