1762 ATLAS MODERNE'Atlas Moderne' which was published in 1762. Has the very important maps of North America and Maps of western hem, showing a large inland lake The very hard to find FIRST EDITION of Rigobert Bonne's larger than the State of Texas. Bonne was an engineer, mathematician and cartographer. He succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as the hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine.

Jean Lattre was the publisher of this edition, he may also have been this maps engraver. With maps by Bonne, Jean Janvier and Rizzi-Zannoni. Cartographer:Rigobert Bonne (17271795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the DepĂ´t de la Marine.

Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonnes work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.

Principal Works[edit] Maps for Guillaume Raynal's Atlas de toutes les parties connues du Globe Terrestre (Geneva, 1780) Maps for Atlas Encyclopedique... (2 volumes, Paris, 1788) Cartographer: Jean Lattre fl. 1743 - 1793 was a Paris based bookseller, engraver, and map publisher active in the mid to late 18th century. Lattre published a large corpus of maps, globes, and atlases in conjunction with a number of other important French cartographic figures, including Janvier, Zannoni, Bonne and Delamarche. He is also known to have worked with other European cartographers such as William Faden of London and the Italian cartographer Santini.

Paris court records indicate that Lattre brought charges against several other period map publishers, including fellow Frenchman Desnos and the Italian map engraver Zannoni, both of whom he accused of copying his work. Lattre's offices and bookshop were located at 20 rue St. CONDITION: ATLAS IS COMPLETE WITH ALL PAGES AND MAPS. Professionally REBOUND WITH LEATHER SPINE AND 1/8th LEATHER covered hard BOARDS with PAPER OVER hard COVER.

Maps are very good condition with a couple maps with age spots and water stains mainly outside of map border as shown in pictures, a couple small repairs to page edges that do not affect maps or content. Many maps have dates of 1762 printed inside of the beautiful engravings included with most maps. The content page shows 36 maps but there is no map #25 listed in the content page. If you include the Sphere Armillaire as a map then there are 36 total maps and plans. This is a very hard to find atlas with all maps and pages, in very good condition.

Atlas has the fascinating map of North America by Jean Janvier dating to 1762 By far the most interesting aspects of this map deal with Janvier's treatment of the largely unexplored Pacific Northwest. A magnificent sea called the Sea of the West or in this case the'Baye de L'Ouest,' occupies the greater part of the northwestern part of the continent. This body of water, alternatively called the Sea of the West or Mer de l'Ouest, was speculated by Philippe Buache and Guillaume De l'Isle in the early 18th century based upon wishful thinking, American Indian stories, and the somewhat questionable 16th century explorations of Juan de Fuca. Janvier gives the Mer de l'Ouest its fullest expression, though he specifically does not connect it to either the network of lakes and rivers extending westward from the Hudson Bay or to the similar network extending westward from Lake Superior.
