Rare books at fair prices... Asia - China & Japan. Publisher: London: Royal Geographical Society, 1882. Item is in ORIGINAL Condition, With Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads!! Notes & Condition: A Succinct and exceedingly rare account of an expedition undertaken by Cameron and Burton to explore the regions of the Kong Mountains.
The Kong Mountains are apparently cut through by the Niger south of Iddah, where the true coast begins. Travellers describe the features almost in the words of Clapperton and Duncan; the towering masses of granite which contrast so strongly with the southern swamps; upstanding outcrops resembling cathedrals and castellations in ruins; boulders of enormous dimensions; pyramids a thousand feet high, and solitary cones which rise like giant ninepins. This absolutely fascinating paper is a rare first edition of Burton's work Richard Burton was one of foremost linguists of his time, as well as an explorer, poet, translator, ethnologist, and archaeologist, amongst other things.
He spent much of his childhood in Italy and France and was educated eclectically. In 1840, he began studies at Trinity College, Oxford and distinguished himself through his eccentric behavior. Two years later, he joined the 18th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry at Baroda, in order to study "Oriental" life and languages. He had already studied some Arabic in London and learned Gujarati, Marathi, Hindustani, Persian and Arabic while in India. He eventually took on a position that allowed him to mix more freely with the indigenous peoples, especially the lower classes, and began to dress like them.
