Exceedingly Rare Original Mahdist War, British Intelligence Map. Lithographed at The Intelligence Branch, War Office. Very Rare, Antique British War Map on Linen, related to the Colonization of Africa & the Sudan. Lithographed at the Intelligence Branch, War Office in January 1885. The British sent an expeditionary force under Lieutenant-General Sir Gerald Graham, including an Indian contingent, to Suakin in March 1885.It became known as the Suakin Expedition. Although it was successful in the two actions it fought, it failed to change the military situation and was withdrawn. These events temporarily ended British and Egyptian involvement in Sudan, which passed completely under the control of the Mahdists. This map was created just two months before this expedition. The Mahdist War was an Extremely Violent War. It created and established a lifelong vision of War for a young Winston Churchill, whom was a Lieutenant with the 21st Lancers in General Kitchener's Army to reclaim Sudan. Original British Intelligence Maps, from the War Office are Exceedingly Rare. Most often these can only be found in the private collections of Governments or Museums.
