A fascinating map of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, prepared at a time when the British influence on the country was increasing. With the imprint at the bottom: Compiled and Zincographed at the Survey Office, Khartoum. Agents for the sale of these maps; England: E. Stanford, 12-14 Long Acre, London.

This is clearly very early mapping of the country. The River "K Gulman" is marked'unsurveyed', so too parts of the River Tonj. There is much descriptive detail - "Occasional thorny thickets", "Reported track (unsurveyed)", "Good water all the year", "Warerless forest"..... Some areas are "Thickly populated", others "Scattered villages".

Various parts are "swampy", there is "ironstone" near Tonj, and vegetation like "Shok trees" is noted. The key includes "Stations from which trigonometrical or astronomical observations have been taken", and marks points intersected trigonometrically. One gets a real feeling of exploration from maps like this one. A note bottom right adds Adjusted to Mr Woolcott's surveys and fixed positions, the topography of this sheet is derived from route surveys and compilation by Major Titherington, and sketches and information supplied by Capts.

It is printed on silk - whether for flying, or just because paper is not suited to the terrain/atmosphere I do not know. But I do know that this is a very scarce map. The British Library has a similar one of Lake Kailak dated 1937. There is an interesting stamp on the back - see last photo. Size: unfolded the map measures 79cms x 57cms. It folds down to 20cms x 15.5cms. Condition: Showing a little wear and staining along the centrefold especially. Slight damp evident on the back. "Tonj 77d" handwritten in ink on the back. The map itself is well-preserved and easy to read. I have other antique maps, books, prints etc.
