Carte Generale De L'Afrique. Issued Paris, 1870 by Andriveau-Goujon.
Engraved by Smith et Gerin. Fine, scarce, and remarkably detailed mid-19th century linen-backed folding case map. Mounted on linen, as issued by the publisher, and dissected into segments. Engraved with original full hand color and ornate title.Includes the mythical Mountains of the Moon running isolated in a strong north to south manner within East Africa near Somalia. Mountains of Kong prominently shown in West Africa, much newly "discovered" interior terrain detail seen north of South Africa & Central. Color key bottom center denoting Colonial possessions of this date. Eight small insets at bottom corners, including Canary Islands, Cape Verde island, Ascension, St. Large oversized format, approaching a small wall map. Rare thus, issued in small numbers with very limited distribution format. 4 split along bottom left linen fold-line due to age of material and weight of board.
