Antique 1550 Africa Map. Original Woodcut Map by Sebastian Munster
Title of Map: Africa, Libya, Morland, mit allen künigsreichen so zu unsern zeiten darin gefunden werden. This is from an early edition of Münster's Cosmographia as evidenced by the. "Xiii" at bottom of text on verso and dates from 1550. Originally published in 1540, this was the first widely disseminated map to show the African continent in its entirety. The same woodcut was used in all editions of the Geographia and Cosmographia. There is much to captivate the eye when examining the map including a cartouche with sailing instructions on how to proceed around Africa to the east, the depiction of a galleon and the famous one eyed figure "Monoculi", situated roughly where modern Nigeria is located, amongst other features. The sheet measures 400 x 320 mm with a plate of 345 x 248 mm, excluding title. Condition is very good as seen in the photos with a strong impression, wide margins, minimal wear at edges (covered when mounted and framed), very light age toning to margins, tape reinforcing to upper corners reverse mounting points?
