This lovely mid-17th century map shows the Cape Verdes embellished with rhumb lines, compass rose and two strapwork cartouches featuring cherubs and birds. The islands were originally discovered by Portuguese explorers, whom colonized the islands in the 15th century making them the first European settlement in the tropics. The islands prospered over several centuries due to their geographic location. They served as a nice stopping point for European trade ships running to and from India, Australia, and the East Indies. Throughout the Atlantic slave trade the islands attracted privateers and pirates including Sir Francis Drake.
The Cape Verdes were also visited by Charles Darwins expedition in 1832. Today the economy is mainly supported by foreign investment and tourism boasting warm year-round climate, diverse landscape and cultural wealth, especially in music.
