Islands Canaries, de bry 1655
Place / Date: Franckfurt 1655. Newe Welt und Americanische Historien. (330 x 200 mm) x (160 x 185 mm). This engraving shows some ships cannons defending the city of Gran Canaria. This army conquered the city but they were later defeated by the island's militias a few weeks later, which destroyed the city before leaving and plundering La Gomera. A Dutch fleet of 74 ships and 12,000 men, commanded by Pieter van der Does, attacked the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the city had 3,500 of Gran Canaria's 8,545 inhabitants). The Dutch attacked the Castillo de la Luz, which guarded the harbor.

The Canarians evacuated civilians from the city, and the Castillo surrendered (but not the city). The Dutch moved inland, but Canarian cavalry drove them back to Tamaraceite, near the city. The present engraving comes from Johann Ludwig Gottfried's abridgment of De Bry.

The illustrations from this work are after Theodor de Bry's and Matthaeus Merian's works in parts 1-12 of the "Grand Voyages". The first edition of the abridgment was published in 1631. The second edition was published by Merian's heirs in Frankfurt in 1655. Please contact me if you haveany questions. This is a guaranteed ORIGINALPRINT from the period of creation, NOT a reproduction.
