North Africa 1603 Abraham Ortelius Unusual Large Antique Engraved Map
"AFRICAE PROPRIAE TABULA In qua Punica, regna uides; Tyrios, et Agenoris urbem". A richly detailed map focusing on the ancient Carthaginian kingdom at the time of the Punic wars. With a map of Carthage in lower left side of the map. The map covers the north African coast from Algeria to Libya, centering on Tunisia and including Malta and the southern coast of Sicily. In bottom center of the map, four colums of placenames of uncertain location. This map has been made by Ortelius on the basis of modern information from Gastaldi's Africa map and ancient knowledge from Diodorus, Siculus, Plilius, Virgilius, Appianus, Halicarnasseus, Athenaeus and Herodotos. A characteristic Ortelius's map embellished with a large cartouche and decorative borders. He is the greatest and the best geographe and cartographe.
Size with margins : 44,5 x 56,5 cm / 17,3 x 22 inches. Edition : Anvers, from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1602, XVIe Century, Latin edition. Condition : good condition, handed old colors.
