North Africa / West Africa / AEthiopia / Mediterranean / Mts. Of Moon myth / Egypt- Arabia- etc. Issued Venice, 1599 by Giovanni Lorenzo D'Anania / Ruscelli & Rosaccio. Printed by heirs of Melchoir Sessa. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1582 plate in 1598-99.
This scarce late issue used the 1561 plate (a close examination of minute details reveals this), but the plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and this this map has no further appearances or printings. Nile river source is prominently featured in a vast mythical mountain range, called'Mountains of the Moon (lune montes). Much of the Arabain peninsula is shown at right edge, southern Europe, Italy, Greece and Turkey across top. Profusion of interior details include a mythical series of rivers, small symbols, etc.Note the exaggerated westward extension at left edge. Seas are stipple engraved in Italian style. In near VG or better condition, small printers ink smudges from original printing process at left side, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, some faint minor offsetting scarcely worthy of mention, overall the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive.
