Unusual antique copper engraved map of the northeastern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Persian Gulf, by Nicolas DE FER, XVIIIe century. The map extends from Constantine in Algeria to the kingdom of Loango, modern day Congo and Gabon. The map is enriched with commentaries on the inhabitants of the region. The Arabian Peninsula is divided into 3 parts: Arabie Deserte, Arabie Pierreuse, Arabie Heureuse.

De Fer has created this map when he was in service of the King of France Louis XIV. He made 3 trips to Louisiana and his brother Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne d'Iberville founded the city New Orleans in 1718.

In 1697, he published his first world atlas. In 1695, De Fer, with several other notable French mapmakers, became founding contributors to the French Bureau of Maps and Plans. This bureau, created to deal with the technical and strategic problems of overseas commerce and exploration, was part of the Royal Academy of Sciences Ministry of the Navy and Colonies. The bureau employed cartographers, engineers and military strategists who planned Frances ventures into the Louisiana Territory. They were tasked with exploring and fortifying the Mississippi and its tributaries before the English could establish a foothold.

The result of their efforts is a map that map which shows a "new world", with both native inhabitants and colonial activities. With the explicatif text of the map. Size with margins : 26,2 x 39 cm / 10,2 x 15,3 inches.
