Original 1851 antique map of eastern South Africa, between Fredericksburg and Delagoa Bay, with two vignettes and a decorative border, printed more than 170 years ago. The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin and published by John Tallis, London, 1851. It is titled Natal and Kaffraria, and the coverage area includes oresent-day Kwa-Zulu-Natal and part of the Eastern Cape. The image area measures 35.6 x 324.2 cm [14" x 9½"].
Topography is drawn in relief, and the map locates cities, towns, rivers, and shoreline features, including Fort Willshire, Amaponda, Maritzburg Missionary Station, the Drakensberg mountain range, Zulu County, British Kaffraria, Kabousie River, Maluana's Kraal, the Indian Ocean, and Grantham. The two vignettes were drawn by H. Winkles and engraved by W.The one at the upper left depicts the entrance to Port Natal; the view at the lower right shows Port Natal, with the town of Durban. The map also displays the Seal of Natal, with the legend Victoria Dei Gratia Britanniar.
