Stunning 1821 antique engraved map of Africa, in original hand color, printed more than 199 years ago. The map is printed on a large double-page sheet, surrounded by letterpress text with geographical and statistical details, including a description of the "abominable commerce" of the European slave trade, centered on the Gulf of Guinea, where natives are brought down from the interior in flocks, consisting of men, women, and children...

And consigned to perpetual slavery. Among the other named places and features are the Tooth Coast, Abyssinia, Tripoli, Madagascar, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Sahara Desert, Morocco, Angola, the Nile River, the Slave Coast, Cape Town, Alexandria, Egypt, the Mountains of the Moon, Nubia, Cairo, the Gold Coast, and Fez. The map was drawn by Jehoshaphat Aspin and engraved by Young & Delleker. It was published in Lavoisne's Genealogical, Historical, Chronological, and Geographical Atlas by Matthew Carey & Son, Philadelphia, 1821. It is dated in the cartouche and in the lower margin.

It identified as Plate 66, from the third Philadelphia edition of the atlas. Overall sheet size is 45 x 55.4 cm [17¾" x 21¾"], and the image area of the map itself measures 28 x 29.4 cm [11" x 11½"]. It is in very good condition, bright and clean, with some faint toning at the center fold and no rips, tears, or writing. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
