Antique early 19th century atlas map with original hand colouring, 1830. The image below shows an enlarged cross section from the centre of the map to show the level of printed detail. This map is folding hence the centrefold line may show on the image below. This wonderful large map shows Africa at the start of the colonial era, when it was still substantially unexplored by Europeans. The substantial blank area in the centre of the continent is described only as "Regions unexplored".
A non-existent mountain range traverses the continent west to east - the Mountains of Kong, and the Mountains of the Moon - a cartographic error that persisted for much of the 19th century. The Niger river is shown inaccurately to flow into one of a number of lakes marked in a location somewhere close to the actual location of Lake Chad. IMAGE SIZE: Approx 53.0 x 63.0cm, 20.75 x 24.75 inches (Large); Please note that this is a folding map.
