PAYS et COSTE des CAFFRES EMPIRES DE MONOMOTAPA MONOEMUGI, etc. This is the rare original first published by Sanson in 1656. Sanson was the Royal Geographer to the King of France and perhaps the most important commercial mapmaker of his generation.
This original map shows Southern Africa including the territories of present-day Namibia, the Republic of South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is taken from Sansons work "Description de Tout l'Univers", not the later copy by Halma of 1700 in which the cartouches are undated. Much of the detail is of course inventive. There are numerous rivers, mountains and inland cities marked.
The kingdom of Monomotapa covers most of the interior with a city of the same name on the bank of the Spiritus River. Rivers flowing from the Mountains of the Moon (Montagnes de la Lune) feed an unnamed lake that appears to be the mythical Lake Zaire. The coast is peppered with place names. There is a very attractive floral cartouche by Antoine de Winter.
