I have here for sale a genuine seventeenth century map of the West African region, entitled GUINEA. The map was by John Ogilby and appeared in the English edition of Montanus which was published in 1671. This elegantly engraved map covers the Gold Coast from Sierra Leone to Gabon and includes Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Ghana. This is Ogilby's English edition of Montanus. The map is very similar to the Blaeu edition including the small drawings of animals and it shares rhumb lines and fancy scroll text in the sea. Ogilby's version has three ships and half a compass rose at the middle bottom. The fancy title cartouche is flanked by trumpeting Angels and other allegorical figures. To the right, two child-like sea creatures are carrying a large elephant tusk which contains the distance scale.
The map is framed and glazed. I will be able to send this to you if you want to keep the frame - but please bear in mind that the postal courier may break the glass. If you prefer, I can take the map out of the glass frame and just send the map on its own.We wrap and post the parcels on Monday and Tuesday - therefore if you pay before midday on Tuesday we will get it in the postal sacks on Tuesday night, and if it is after that time then. It will go into the postal service on the following Monday. The item "1671 MAP of GUINEA by JOHN OGILBY SIERRA LEONE to GABON NIGERIA FRAMED GLAZED" is in sale since Sunday, October 24, 2021.
