This is volume 2 only, it is AFRICA, 578 pages plus index, and MAPS. As shown, by John Payne. A new and complete system; of UNIVERSAL GEOGRAPHY.

Wear to covers as shown, ex libris sticker on inside cover, old owners name in ink on first blank page. Nice fold out map of AFRICA, A FEW MUMY engravings, some engravings of people (Gonaqua girl, a Caffre woman) a larger fold out Correct Map of the Mediterranean Sea with countries adjacent, and lots of information, spotting throughout, as shown in photos. Wear to spine, and original leather, neat as heck. John Payne was a little known American cartographer and map publisher working in New York and Philadelphia in the last years of the 19th century.

He is a somewhat mysterious figure of which little is known, but his work is important as one of the first examples of American commercial cartography. His most important work is the 1798-9 issue of Payne's New and Complete Universal Geography. The scale behind the item is in inches.
