A scarce map with the imprint bottom left Drawn by J. " In the centre: "Published by John Thomson & Co." To the right, "Hewitt Sc. The map is taken from Wyld's General Cabinet Atlas....
which was first published in 1819. A fine map of a continent that was still relatively unexplored at that time. Rather than filling the spaces with imaginary animals and lakes, etc. Wyld is honest enough to state "Regions Unexplored", and show blank areas in the centre. He does, however, depict the "Mountains of the Moon" were a fictitious range which stretch from the Nile in the east, all the way across to the western coast in this depiction. They had been thought to exist since Greek and Roman times. This is an attractive map, with simple border handcolouring, and a vignette depicting sacrificial rituals at the source of the Nile. It will be sent in its burgundy mount, as seen in the photographs. I can find no more copies of this map for sale online.
Wyld and Thomson were key figures in early 19th century map publishing. Size: the mount measures approx. Two small paint blobs bottom right. I think the border colouring is original.I have other antique maps, books, prints etc. The item "1819 Africa Wyld Thomson Hewitt Nile Vignette Regions Unexplored Antique Map" is in sale since Sunday, June 28, 2020.
