Totius Africae Nova Repraesentatio qua praeter diversos in ea Status et Regiones, etiam Origo Nili. Richly ornamented map of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula with the typical inaccuracies of eighteenth century cartography. It is colored by region and identifies topographical features and settlements.
Nile is based partly on Ptolemy (rising in two large lakes, Zaire and Zaflan) and partly on the 16th century discovery of the source of the Nile by the Portuguese Paez. The elaborate title cartouche is filled with interesting imagery including the pyramids, ivory trading, the source of the Nile, a troop of monkeys (throwing rocks at their hunters), kings, chiefs and warriors, a fat-tailed sheep with its tail supported by a wagon and cherubs bringing salvation to the continent. The map comes from the atlas Atlas Novus Terrarum Orbis Imperia... Sheet size: 51,5 x 60,5 cm. Lower center fold separation reinforced on verso.
