North Africa Babaria atlas map Mercator Hondius 1638. Description: Early Large Map of Babaria North Africa during the Ottoman time. The map is showing three maps on one sheet, the higher map, the Mediterranean with Islands, and old borders of Babaria, the Siege of Tunis, and a map of the Nile Delta.

All with a nice title cartouche and a military mile scale. The first Ottoman conquest of Tunis took place in 1534 under the command of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha, the younger brother of Oruç Reis, who was the Kapudan Pasha of the Ottoman Fleet during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. Text verso: Barbaria in Qua Regnum.

Origin: Atlas Novus by Johannes Janssonius (1588 -1664) born Jan Janszoon. Koeman, 1:411/3, (90) Van der Krogt 1, 8610:1A. In the 1630s Janssonius he formed a partnership with his brother in law Hendrius Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.

Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged and renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638. 16th -17th -18th-19th Century maps & atlases & prints.
