An original 18th century copper engraved antique map of Southern Africa. A very interesting map with two huge lakes, Zaire Sea and Zaflan Sea straddling the Luna Mountains (elsewhere Mountains of the moon).
The equally mythical River Magnice flows from Monomotapa northwards to the Zaire Sea. Coverage includes present day South Africa, (Coast and country of the Cafres and Hottentots).
Botswana, Numibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. A fine example of this very scarce map. The book itself was originally written as a teaching aid for students by Johann Hubner, a German scholar. Cowley translated the book into English from high Dutch and added a set of interesting maps to illustrate the work. Some of the maps bear the signature of Emanuel Bowen and he may well have engraved all of them as they follow a common format, albeit varying in size. Ree of repairs or restoration, blank verso. 5" x 4.5" (130mm x 110mm) map area only, with margins beyond. A GENUINE ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAP GUARANTEED OVER 260 YEARS OLD FROM LINDISFARNE PRINTS.
